It’s that time again!

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!!

Where am I going? CANADA!!! To be reunited with friends and family (hope you’re ready for me)

Will I write during the holidays? It’s very unlikely

Will I return in the New Year? Of course, as long as there’s weird stuff to share I’ll do it!

Thanks for reading this year, see you all in 2008!

Getting It Right

I’d like to go back to my roots here for a minute and explore some forms of marketing I’ve found lately.

Example 1:
I’m all for getting into the Christmas spirit and adapting your product to accommodate the festive time to generate more sales. But some companies just get it completely wrong so much so that you have to stop and wonder ‘What were they thinking?’

Let’s take McDonalds 'Festive' menu here in the UK this includes Terry’s Orange McFlurry

Getting it right

But then they go and add a mincemeat and custard pie to the mix – GROSS!!!!

This is honestly the most disgusting thing I’ve seen (that’s edible) in a long time….talk about getting it wrong. Not even that sweet pastry will lure me in

Example 2:
I get newsletters from various magazines on a daily basis and for the most part really enjoy the designs and content for most, some even make me laugh. Take for example Marketing Magazine’s email reminder for entering the 2008 Marketing Awards before it’s too late:

This is a fantastic piece of advertising – it’s funny, in your face yet not intrusive – Brilliant!

We Need More Signs!!!

Talk about overkill. I don't think anyone will be tripping on that spill....

Via: The Triumph of Bullshit (what would I do without you?)

Marcia where are you?

In High School before all my friends (the core 9) and I went our own ways for University we created a calendar outlining the funny things we had done in the 5 years we had spent together. It was special and made departing a little easier – knowing that we had experienced so much together and created such amazing memories.

I think Craig Giffen has perfected the ‘gift’ calendar, using friends that just happen to be around him for the last couple of years while he was working on this project; it is fianlly finished– after 4 years of hard work…..and the verdict is: We absolutely love it!

All heads point to today….so cleaver. Check out the full one here

Dress-Up Time

For anyone who has ever had a pet dog or cat you’ll understand the sudden urge to dress them up that so many of us posses! On our family vacation to the Dominican Republic our family brought back a tourist t-shirt for our family Bichon Frise, Lucky (his name, not his position). He was less then amused when we forced him to try it on and took (numerous) photos – oh, look how cute he looks! We all proclaimed meanwhile he’s desperate look confessed ‘what did I ever do you?’ So why do we feel the need to do this? Is it because they can’t defend themselves? Say NO, like the rest of us when an older sibling tries to make us wear stupid stuff? I guess we’ll never know. And because we’ll never know is exactly why we should continue. What? they’re just so cute in human clothes okay!

What better way to top that ‘perfect’ pet costume than a WIG! Kitty Wigs is now open for ‘biznazz’ and want to give your cats the perfect colour….how about passion pink or electric blue? For the more conservative they have bashful blonde and silver fox.

I might not be going this far with Lucky but those cats sure look cute! (and I don’t even like cats…..)

Play With Your Food!

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while now but for some reason I always forget when it comes down to it…weird. It’s better late than never right?

London has a fabulous fast food chain called Pret A Manger (Ready to eat) aka Pret to the locals. It was started in 1986 by two friends who met in university whilst studying property law (see anything is possible if you put your mind to it!). In 2001 33% of the private shares (non-controlling) were sold to McDonalds (I can assure you it’s nothing like McDonalds – all the sandwiches and salads are made daily and prepared in the shops with the finest and freshest ingredients). .Anyway, another aspect of this chain that I really enjoy is (of course) its advertising. They use food to create images – faces, objects…take a look, you’ll see what I mean:

Below is the Christmas poster in all the shops…how cute are the little cherry tomatoes singing…fa, la, la, la…

See it’s the little things that make me happy!

Boots Ad

This is by far the best Christmas commerical this season.
N.B. Boots is similar to PharmaPlus or Shoppers Drug Mart

Light Up The Streets

Since most of you aren’t here to see the wonderful Christmas lights and decorations around the city I thought I’d bring them to you (you can thank me later!). Here are some around my work…

Regent Street:

The unique illuminations (aka DNA strands as I like to call them) are entitled ‘Unity’ and are sponsored by Nokia. They change their festive formation/colours depending on the amount of pedestrians on the streets as well as wind speed, the weather and sunlight levels.

Oxford Street:
This Year’s sponsor is Disney; promoting its new animated, live-action movie Enchantment.

My favourite one is......

Carnaby Street:
Those are some great Christmas chains, if I do say so myself.

How's it looking over there?
